Hollywood discovered that slapping a synth soundtrack and a pastel color palette on a villain makes audiences feel something — they're just not sure it's fear. The superhero genre's 80s nostalgia obsession is producing some of the prettiest antagonists in blockbuster history and some of the least threatening ones. Turns out a vaporwave aesthetic is a great substitute for an actual point of view.
